By the time you are ready to work on your college application, your grades, your scores, your extracurriculars, and your teacher recommendations are, for the most part, faits accomplis. Your personal statement is the only piece you still control. It is also the most exciting piece of the whole application, and if done right, can be your pièce de résistance.
Most students think that help with their college essay consists of organizational and grammatical editing. But the best help comes before the student has written a word, because poor content can be edited to perfection and still be lackluster, often downright boring. Just well-written and boring. Before a word can be written, brainstorming must take place to decide on the content: to name the qualities the student wants to highlight, to remember the stories that best illustrate those qualities, and to discover the best metaphor or theme to tie the whole essay together. After that, the writing of the essay falls into place. Editing is the final touch.
Most competitive colleges require supplemental essays in addition to the personal statement. Each piece of the college application is important, and the supplemental essays should not be given short shrift. Admissions committees review each essay, from 25-word short answers to the 650-word Common Application personal statement to garner as complete a picture of the applicant as possible.
